On January 23th, 2003 Hatteras Island was hit by what was called a sixty years event - more than 12 inches of snow fell in 24 hours , winds blew over 40 mph and large portions of the sound froze. This was the highest snowfall recorded in 60 years and left a lasting impression on Hatteras Islanders, many of whom had never experienced this sort of cold and icy weather before.
