Hatteras Island runs north and south from Oregon Inlet on its north end to Buxton on its southern end. At Buxton the island changes direction and runs east and west. The spot at which the island changes direction is known as "The Point". This is also where the famous Diamond Shoals - also known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" - begin. These shoals are formed by the cold waters of the northern Labrador Current clashing with the warm waters of the southern Gulf Stream Current at this point and, if you have a 4 wheel drive or don't mind a nice long walk on the beach, is one of the must see sights on Hatteras Island. Click on the above picture to take a trip to "The Point". For additional pictures of "The
Point"
