Disappearing Beach
Here is an extreme example of how dynamic and ever changing Hatteras Island is. For years, this beach
to the left of the dune was at least a hundred feet wide and provided driving access to south beach from
"The Point". In the 2002-2003 winter months, this beach totally disappeared and is now impassable even
at low tide. Update -On the 18th of Sept, 2003, Hurricane Isabel hit Hatteras Island and again made this
part of the beach passable by vehicle.
